Discussing 'honest' look at life

South Wales Argus: 9 July 2007

Newport residents put the focus on the city for a unique exhibition that opened on the weekend.

People living in the Stow Hill area took a series of “honest and varied” photographs of Newport, its photography and lifestyle.

Through My Eyes was developed and supported by professional photographer Mansel Davies and is on display in the SHARE (Stow Hill Access, Resource and Enterprise) Centre.

It was organised and jointly supported by the center, a facility run by the Seren Group's Charter Housing, and ECHO Stow Hill community group.

Rachel Kettle, SHARE's project development manager, said: “Our volunteer photographers included young and old alike, from a 21-year-old resident of one of the Charter Housing facilities, through to a gentleman in his seventies who had never picked up a camera before in his life.”

Amanda Davies, chief executive of the Seren Group, said it had gone far beyond just a group of volunteers learning a new skill.

“The activity has contributed a body of work that brings together thoughts and feelings about this vibrant city.”

At the launch on Friday night, the photographers themselves were on hand to chat about their work with the guests.
