Deana takes small steps to a big change

South Wales Argus: 11 June 2007

Deana Jenkins is preparing to leave her dad's care and live independently for the first time – a prospect that delights the 40 year-old.

Her father Mike is also happy as he knows his daughter will receive the back-up she needs in her new home.

Miss Jenkins will be moving to accommodation near Newport city centre provided by Reach Supported Living, a member of the Seren Group.

Miss Jenkins has severe epilepsy and can have a fit at any time without warning. It means she has to wear protective headwear.

Her mum died last year and since then her 69-year-old dad has taken over more of the caring duties, including shopping, washing and ironing.

He said: “When my wife was alive we split things between us.

Both he and his daughter were keen that she become more independent. To help with the transition, she is spending time in the supported accommodation before moving in full-time.

“It's great. I like it there,” said Miss Jenkins.

She will have her own room in the shared house, which has two permanent members of staff, and will be able to learn new skills.

“I would like to learn to cook properly,” she said.

Jerry Shelton, Reach corporate director, said: “Mike and Deana are typical of so many of the people we help.

“It's vital that elderly parents of people with learning difficulties plan for their future because the time will come when they will no longer be able to care for them.”

With the help of trained staff, they could help a successful transition to supported living “where they will be able to build on their life skills and learn new ones empowering them to live more independent fulfilling lives.”
