Cultivates Confidence

Voice Magazine: June 2006

Newport-based homeless organisation Solas Cymru has teamed up with Usk College to cultivate a new scheme to help local homeless people get back to nature.

Cultivates Confidence picHalf an acre of land has been allocated to Solas to grow and harvest organic salad vegetables and herbs. Twelve students from Solas visit the land twice a week to tend to the crops. The produce grown is used back at the organisation's day centre, with the Catering Department providing nutritious food to homeless people; it is also being sold at local farmers' markets with the proceeds from sales being ploughed back into the organisation.

Solas, a member of the Seren Group, provides accommodation, training and support for homeless and vulnerable people in South East Wales. Gardening is just one of the activities on offer at the arts and sports-based day centre in George Street.
