Care scheme wins high praise

South Wales Argus: 8 March 2006

An extra care scheme that is helping older people live independently for longer in Blackwood was praised by the Assembly minister for health and social services.

Dr Brian Gibbons paid tribute to the landmark scheme during a visit to residents and staff of Cefn Glas which was officially opened by Labour MEP Glenys Kinnock last month.

Cefn Glas was developed through a partnership between Caerphilly council and the Newport-based Seren Group.

The design of 42 self-contained flats enables older people to live independently, while maintaining the care and support of a traditional residential home.

Dr Gibbons said he was especially interested in the SMART flat - equipped with a range of sophisticated equipment including smoke, flood and fall detectors, bed occupancy sensors and automated door openers - that can be used to help older and vulnerable people live independently, while providing the resident and their family with peace of mind.

Dr Gibbons said: "The scheme captures the essence of living in a tight-knit community."
